Phil Wickham’s “The Ascension” is yet another amazing project. He has built a solid foundation that each album continues to grow upon. This album is a beautiful reminder of where our focus needs to be, with each and every song being a reminder of where we sit- looking towards Heaven waiting for our Creator to bring us home. Some people would call Phil a singer who sings worship music, but there is no such music. Music is made to be worship with its binding lyrics to build you up and give you peace in thinking about Jesus.

The title song, “The Ascension” has lyrics that remind the listener to be deliberate in their approach of Christ, to take deliberate steps towards Him. These words are a rally cry to join in and start that journey.

Let us start the ascension
Let's begin the climb
Up this holy mountain
Where Your glory shines
Further up, further in
Just to be with You again
Let us start the ascension

“This Is Amazing Grace” is a song of thanks to Christ for what He has done for us. A reminder of just what His sacrifice gives us daily. It also reminds us of what our proper reverence for Him should be; just what power and might He truly has.

“Carry My Soul” and “When My Heart Is Torn Asunder” are a hearts cry. “Carry My Soul” is a song of wanting to live like David-chasing after God no matter what happens. “When My Heart is Torn Asunder” is a way of reminding us that no matter how bad it gets, Christ has already promised us a new and better life in Him. Combined they are a beautiful reminder of God’s goodness in the middle of all our trials and just what we are living for.

“Thirst” finishes out the album in a prayer like style. The words are a prayer for healing, a prayer for His love:

I thirst for you
I thirst for you
You're the well that won't run dry
Only you can satisfy

I thirst for you
I thirst for you
Living water flow to me
All I ask is just one drink
I thirst for you

The entire album is a reminder of God’s love being over us all and with us in all things. A cry to bring us closer to God in the midst of all our trials, good times, heartaches, and joys.

Slightly Obsessed #186: When the Path Ahead Is Fearsome

The room was dark and shadowed, the only sound within its walls the rhythmic whoosh of the ventilator beside my son’s bed. I sat on an uncomfortable chair jammed into one corner of the room. In the faint light that fell from the window across the pages of the Bible I held, I tried to corral my stampeding fears long enough to find some comfort from God’s Word. Outside the door of his room, a cacophony of voices from the nurses’ station jarred our shattered nerves.
