Third Day "Revival"

The latest release Revival by Third Day is another chapter in a group that has shaped the Christian music industry for more than two decades. From Marietta Georgia, the group formed in 1990 and is still comprised of lead singer Mac Powell and guitarist Mark Lee. Bassist, Tai Anderson left in 2015 after 23 years with the band. Over this period, they have won multiple awards including four Grammy’s and the distinct vocals of Mac Powell are one of the things that have made Third Day such a distinct group.

The core of this album revolves around getting back to the very roots and sounds of where Third Day started. Fulfilling a lifelong dream, the group went to Muscle Shoals, Alabama and Fame Studio. Instead of hitting the studio with a polished album this is collaboration of ideas and sounds that capture the energy and talent of Third Day.

Comprised of 13 tracks, “Love Hits Me Like a Rock” is the only outside track and is a collaboration with the Oak Ridge Boys. This album has a distinct sound and while the roots of Third Day are southern it’s not so easily cornered. Just as Country music has continued to evolve over the years it has grown closer and closer to pop music with many cross-over artists. While not country Third Days style and sounds put them in a class very close to this comparison, in fact Mac Powel has released two country solo albums. Third Day has successfully influenced Christian Rock, Southern Rock and Contemporary Worship.

While the sound of this album is distinct, the lyrical and spiritual influence of Revival are also just as distinct. Not merely a worship album or just Christian Rock I like the quote from Mac Powell as saying listening to this album is like going to church. While the music is enjoyable there is also a lyrical stress on what’s truly important and that is living for the Lord.

While lyrically this is not a biographical album but praise and worship, it does give you a glimpse at the energy and drive behind Third Day. Behind the southern sound is a strong message of how much we need the Lord. I loved the balance this album strikes between songs that you can tell were just fun for the group to perform and some that were serious about worship.

While this style of music will not appeal to everyone this is truly a great album that represents the creative energy of Third Day. While I’m personally not a fan of country music the vocals and guitar pull off a southern sound that anyone can enjoy. If you’re looking for a different sound to round out your music collection then this is an album worth getting.
