Planetshakers "Overflow (Live)"
by Andrew Funderburk ( on 2016-10-12 09:30:58

Following on the heels of high energy projects "#LETSGO" and "This is Our Time," Melbourne based adult/youth movement carries that same energy into 2016. While the energy of worship is carried through their new collection of music, the feel is much more devotional and reflective, rather than an all-out party album. That feel truly reflects the title of the project, as it carries the sound and feel of the cry of a heart overflowing with praise.

"Overflow" does kick into high gear by first laying down the bass driven “Come Right Now” which is quickly followed and matched in energy by the title track. From there, the album enters into a more reflective and devotional state with more mature, AC style vocals with the tracks “I Know Who You Are,” “I Came for You,” and “Sings My Soul.” The album then segways in a strange way to an almost three minute track solely made up of vocals singing “oh, oh, oh.” From there the tracks swing up into a more upbeat sound, then back down again…then back up again. That being said, it can feel like a rollercoaster and a little distracting if one listens to the tracks back to back. What “Overflow” carries that previous projects didn’t is that the band has left some of the tracks a little longer, which crosses over to create more of the live experience for the listener.

“Overflow” truly lives up to its name. With each lyric and the combination of instruments, the album sounds like the name. It’s an overflow of a heart full of praise. It carries a meaning that doesn’t sound like the writers were trying just to match up words to rhyme. While the lyrics may be simple at times, they hold a power that comes from drawing from the depth of a soul. Especially for the slower tracks, there is a truth that reverberates through each word that is sung. Despite what might be considered small “flaws,” Planetshakers' newest collection offers an excellent resource for worship leaders or for one’s devotional time.

Slightly Obsessed #186: When the Path Ahead Is Fearsome

The room was dark and shadowed, the only sound within its walls the rhythmic whoosh of the ventilator beside my son’s bed. I sat on an uncomfortable chair jammed into one corner of the room. In the faint light that fell from the window across the pages of the Bible I held, I tried to corral my stampeding fears long enough to find some comfort from God’s Word. Outside the door of his room, a cacophony of voices from the nurses’ station jarred our shattered nerves.
