Young Oceans "Voices, Vol. 1"

Consistently through the years, Young Oceans has produced excellent lyrical and musical material. Which is probably why there have been multiple requests for them to “adapt their songs to the local church.” Their response to those requests comes in the form of Voices, Vol. 1. This album takes the time to go back through their more well known songs and, in a sense, “re-create” them for a congregation to join in singing.

This album is filled with a backing choir throughout the entire project, bringing the congregational style of singing full circle. On top of that, the band is joined by multiple worship leaders who are making an impact on music today. Some of these people include, Leeland, All Sons and Daughters, Ellie Holcomb, Evan Wickham, Harvest, Mike Donehey from Tenth Avenue North, and Sarah Macintosh.

Stand-out tracks would be “My All in Thee”, where Ellie Holcomb takes a strong lead with the choir strongly backing her; the inspirational and motivational “None But Thee” led out by Leeland; the opening track “Until These Tears are Gone,” which is a stripped back track being led by Harvest; and “Let This Heart Not Wander” also performed by Harvest, which feels as if it’s a hymn written over 100 years ago.

Overall, Voices, Vol. 1 takes Young Oceans' music to a new level. It lends a fresh perspective on the lyrics and music they have written. While the project does take a more congregational direction, the music still holds the contemplative component, which the band does so well. The repertoire would be a great addition to those starry, campfire worship nights or leading for church gathering.
