Passion "Salvation's Tide Is Rising"

The Passion conference established in early 1997 has evolved into a nation wide conference where thousands gather around the country to worship, learn and help those in need. Starting from the beginning, Passion has released a new collection of live worship tracks each year that were actually recorded live at Passion. In recent years, the Passion records didn’t offer a lot of diversity in tone or lyrical text. On top of it, they went from a rough “live” sound to a more polished sound that made me sometimes question if it was even live. Knowing this, I was taken back when Passion announced a change to this year’s record. It wouldn’t be recorded live, it would be recorded in studio and would be available before the actual Passion conference.

A quick look at the record shows one big change. More diversity. No artist appears more than twice. (Tomlin only appears once) We are also introduced to three new artists that breathe new life into this project. (Brett Younker, Melodie Malone and Jimi Cravity) They fit nicely with our veteran Passion artists Kristian Standfill, David Crowder, Matt Redman, Christy Nockels and Chris Tomlin.

Crowder’s “All We Sinners” is an arousing anthem about us being saved and rescued even though we are sinners. “Surrender” by Jimi Cravity, a highlight, is musically one of the best on the record. The loops and beats give the track a modern music feel while not taking away from the overall message. He is definitely an artist to watch for in the future.

I wasn’t sure how I would feel about a studio Passion record but must say that the production on this record is spot on. Each track is not over produced or too polished. Right when you think they are sticking to the same formula, like Chris Tomlin’s “God and God Alone” they then give us a beautiful track like “Simple Pursuit “or “Surrender.” Lyrically it may stick to similar worship songs but the musical approach makes it stand out as one of the better worship records out there today. If you’re looking for a new worship record to start 2016, check out Salvation’s Tide is Rising!
