We Are Leo "Fightback Soundtrack"

Described as being “high energy, original,” “extremely authentic,” and having “melodic and cutting edge melodies [that] are both soothing and empowering,” electro pop/new wave throwback band, We Are Leo, is back after their debut release three years ago. We Are Leo’s sophomore release, Fightback Soundtrack, is packed full of fun beats, but amidst the synth, there is a depth to be found within the lyrics. The album explores themes like love, acceptance, identity, loneliness, and rising from pain.

Fightback opens with the catchy and metaphorically engaging song, Yours4Sure. (Feeling dance beats on these desert streets/I’m Yours/For sure [Chorus] On this open road/My heart beats hope/Under the sapphire blue/And I have it all because of You/I’m alive and free/Because You’re here beside/Forever true). Out of the twelve tracks on the album, other tracks that stand out are ones like Phoenix, which describes being in the middle of painful circumstances, but ultimately love will raise us from the ashes. (I will rise/Rise again/From the ashes/Like a phoenix/I will rise/When the world is burning down around me/And in the night/I’m brought back to life/From the ashes/Like a phoenix). Amnesia talks about needing to remember one’s own identity amidst confusion and lies. (When my mind goes blank/You restore/My memory thanks You/You cured of amnesia/When I’ve gotten myself so lost/You knew right where I was/And cured me of amnesia). Emphasizing walking from deadness into life, Diamonds in the Dark paints vibrant lyrical scenes to describe this scenario. (Like a million stars out in the night/Our hearts will burst open wide/We have found hope in our brokenness/We’re beauty from ashes/We will rise/And light up the night/And shine like diamonds in the dark) Northern Lights holds a unique way of portraying God’s closeness and love when we’re feeling loneliness. (Another northern lights/Your love will keep me warm tonight/To fight the cold and ice/In the comfort of Your arms tonight/But I know that I will be safe as I rest in Your embrace/Another northern lights/Your love will keep me warm tonight)

Overall, the entire album keeps a relatively even pace, with a few up-tempo and slowed down moments mixed in between. Although the beats are fun and engaging, at times they can feel a little too similar to other songs that are already out in the music realm. There are small moments that can also feel a bit cheesy lyrically, but the overall lyrical presence is creative and well executed. The vocals draw the ear into the music to listen for the message that is being sung. For a fun, engaging, yet heart-impacting musical experience, We Are Leo’s Fightback Soundtrack is the place to listen!
