Francesca Battistelli’s new album If We’re Honest starts strong with her latest radio release, “Write Your Story.” This upbeat track brings a strong mix of lyrics, feel, and musicality, which is no doubt reason for much of its radio success.

Francesca’s voice is a powerhouse of soul. Her amazing range allows her to effortlessly belt any note of her choosing. While a few tracks on this 15-song offering may represent a slight vocal variance, she has demonstrated yet again her ability as a capable vocalist.

The new album is long and offers a lot to choose from. Themes of busy life, uncertainty, and faith recur throughout the album. Musically, the album leans a bit toward country themes while still keeping a firm foot in upbeat pop. At times, this pop feel can seem to contrast with the lyrical flow. However, a song that expertly combines feel, lyrics, and a taste of country is “Find Rest.” Show-casing the lower end of Francesca’s range, the track includes a choir into the post-bridge chorus, and the song is a soulful reminder to trust God even in times of trial. Also along these lines is “Giants Fall,” an upbeat call for victory. Vocally, the song has an expert riff and ends on a beautifully-executed last note.

If We’re Honest features guest appearances from two familiar artists, All Sons & Daughters, and Matt Hammitt. The lead vocalist of Sanctus Real joins Francesca on the track, “Hands of God”; this is one of my favorite songs on the entire album. Their two voices blend beautifully together and the harmony is tight. The song’s rhythm and drive highlight a meaningful message about the characteristics of a true friend.

The album also includes a beautiful cover of the “Holy Spirit”. Francesca’s passion and heart for worship is evident on this song, and ultimately through the entirety of the album.

Slightly Obsessed #184: The Mark of Maturity

The infant finishes his bottle and smiles contentedly up at his mother. A trickle of milk courses down from the corner of his mouth. It’s a sweet scene because that’s what babies do. They are born with immature digestive systems and no teeth. Mother’s milk or formula are necessary for the child to survive and thrive. As they grow, their teeth begin to come in, their digestive abilities mature, and they can tolerate solid food.
