"The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear Him, And rescues them." – Psalm 34:7

The images were surreal, as if replayed from a Hollywood movie. But the mayhem, blood, and horror were very real as a French SWAT team stormed a Parisian shop and freed the hostages taken by a terror group affiliated with Al Qaeda. Over and over we watched the replay on the news as people bolted to safety under the watchful eyes of the police.

There are so many things to fear in our world.

Many of us fear death, or at least the suffering that precedes it. Some of us fear losing our homes, our relationships, our youth, our health, our faith, our sanity. Most of us are afraid of something. On the other hand, God has commanded us to live fearlessly. But how is that possible when we are trapped by circumstances in seemingly hopeless situations?

In all things, we are promised that God will give us a path to victory. Below are five powerful ways to fight back fear when it lurks at our doors:

1. Believe in His Word.

Platitudes and positive thinking won’t rescue us from danger. We need to know that He will do what He says. Key to this is actually reading His Word and making it a vital part of our being, so when we get into trouble, His promises are already stored up in our hearts for easy access.

2. Trust in His power.

It’s not up to us to solve every problem. Success does not depend on us, nor do God-sized burdens belong on our shoulders. Our job is to do what we can and actively practice God’s words to “Cease striving and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10) when darkness threatens to overtake us.

3. Understand how much He loves you.

That’s probably impossible on this side of heaven, but we can get some idea of this as we think on the great sacrifice Jesus Christ made for us. The Bible says that God counts every hair on our heads (Luke 12:7) and He saves up all our tears (Psalm 56:8). His thoughts toward us are more numerous than the grains of sand (Psalm 139:18). That’s limitless love.

4. Know what to fear.

Repeatedly in the Bible we are encouraged to fear only God. We are to acknowledge His greatness and give Him the reverence He deserves. Nothing is greater than Him. Nothing.

5. Practice His presence continually.

Because He lives in every believer, there is no one closer to us than God. He already knows all our fears, doubts, and mistakes, and still—amazingly—He stays with us. It’s okay to open up to Him and enjoy the constant fellowship that is available to us. He wants to comfort and guide us through our tragedies and joys. Why would we choose to suffer alone, when our Father is here to walk with us?

Fear is a powerful emotion. It takes courage to pull away from its clutches and watch the skies instead for the Comforter, the Deliverer, the One who can calm our souls with a single command:

“Peace, be still.” Mark 4:39

Slightly Obsessed #216: Daddy Has You

As I sat at the red light, a pick-up pulled up beside me in the other lane. The window was rolled down, and the driver rested his arm lazily on the door ledge. A chihuahua fur baby sat perched in the crook of the driver’s arm, yapping with all its tiny might at the pickup in front of me.
Slightly Obsessed #215: Sunday School Had It Right

A Ugandan friend once told us that growing up in Sunday school, he quickly learned how to answer the Bible questions in class. “The right answer,” he said with a smile, “is always, ‘Jesus.’" As a child, no matter what question was posed in class, he always answered, “Jesus.”
Slightly Obsessed #214: Friendly Fire

In 1788, the Austrian army turned on itself and decimated its own ranks, allowing its enemy to walk in and take the city. Are we allowing the same thing to happen on the spiritual battlefield?
Slightly Obsessed #213: God of the Mountains

While life is so uncertain, one thing is: God loves us so much, and He will never abandon us. No matter what happens in the coming days, months, or years, God is in control. And He will give us the strength to overcome any trial that comes our way.
Jordan For Jesus #039: Find the GOLD in People

Find the GOLD in people. If you only see fault, error, wrongs, sins, and what is bad, in people, then you have no time to love them. You cannot judge people and love people, at the same time, which is why the Word of God instructs us to look for what is good in people. When we look for the good, in people, we are choosing to see people through the eyes of God.
Slightly Obsessed #212: Believe

Sometimes it feels like just getting out of bed sets us up for defeat. But we shouldn’t be surprised. God clued us in thousands of years ago in the book of Job when He warned us that we are born for trouble as surely as sparks from a fire will fly up into the sky.
