When the Nazis came for the communists,
I did not speak out;
As I was not a communist.

When they locked up the social democrats,
I did not speak out;
I was not a social democrat.

When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
As I was not a trade unionist.

When they came for the Jews,
I did not speak out;
As I was not a Jew.

When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.

-Martin Niemoller

On June 10 of this year, when the Islamic State was declared in Mosul, Iraq, the militants there promised tolerance to the Christians living there. Iraq has been the ancestral home to millions of Christians since early Christianity took root there.

The promise of tolerance quickly dissolved. Those Iraqi Christians that had not already fled Mosul on June 10 were surprised when loudspeakers recently began blaring this edict from the new Islamic State:

Convert to Islam, pay a tax to the State, or face death.

Thousands of Christians have fled the city. Militants confiscate their possessions at the Islamic State checkpoints. Is this beginning to sound familiar?

This is 2014. But change the date to 1938, the place to Germany, the oppressors to Nazis, the oppressed to Jews, and you have the beginning of the Holocaust. The Nazi regime targeted the Jewish nation, Christians, and anyone else who did not fit into the ideal Aryan Nation.

Today is another time, a different place, with a new oppressor. But the dark clouds of hate emanate from the same source, from an enemy whose one goal is to destroy all who worship the true God on this earth. Its grip is quickly spreading through the nations.

Once again, politicians deliberate while tragedy unfolds across the continents. It is not time to be complacent. It is time to pray without ceasing, to speak out for what is right, to reach all we can with the gospel, and to support our suffering brothers and sisters around the world.

Or one day, there may be no one left to speak for us.

But speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ. –Ephesians 4:15

Remember the prisoners, as though in prison with them, and those who are ill-treated, since you yourselves also are in the body. Hebrews 13:3

Is it really so important to know and obey God's Word if we're already saved? Isn't worrying about obedience just a form of legalism? Don't we live in the age of grace?
Slightly Obsessed #203: God Doesn’t Need Our Thanks

If we were to walk through an open door to heaven as the apostle John did in a vision during his imprisonment on Patmos, we would not find a forlorn father awaiting a phone call from his children, but a royal residence filled with glory.

The Scriptures tell us that it is impossible to please God without faith. But how does pleasing God present evidence of our faith to a dying world?
Slightly Obsessed #201: A Portrait of Faith: Thirsty

The Bible assures us that our faith is the evidence of an unseen world and its promises. But faith is not just belief. It is the expression of our belief before God and man. So then, what does faith look like?
Slightly Obsessed #200: God Sees Your Despair

She was well-dressed, beautiful, and accomplished. She had just flown across the country to teach at a conference and looked fully the part: Sharp. Witty. Color-coordinated. And she nearly left with that image safely in place, until God revealed her despair.
Slightly Obsessed #199: Let No One Take Your Song

If nothing else good should happen to us except salvation, it is enough to fill our every moment with His praise.
